Myth 1: The Hypnotist will control my mind both in session or afterwards.

Fact: No one can control your mind, unless you let them – and then you are actually in control, are you not? Your Hypnotherapist will discuss with you the kinds of suggestions that you’d like to be given based on the counseling session. Furthermore, if you hear a suggestion that you don’t agree with, or don’t understand, your subconscious mind will automatically reject it.

This myth is based on what people see in Stage Hypnotism. People who get hypnotized on stage self-select so they can have fun and perform. Next time you see a show watch how the hypnotist chooses who will be hypnotized.

Hypnotherapists cannot put suggestions into your mind that go against your values or would be harmful for you. This would also be in breach of the counsellor’s code of ethics. Remember; the state of hypnosis is more like one of feeling relaxed and fully aware – heightened awareness rather than an oblivious trance.

Myth 2: Hypnosis is “Magical” or is “Supernatural”.

Fact: Hypnosis is a natural state that has been studied scientifically. We drift in an out of natural trance states all the time – when we are driving and get to our destination without consciously remembering our journey, when we get absorbed in a good book or hobby and don’t notice someone trying to get our attention, when we daydream. Oftentimes this is when we get our best ideas.

Myth 3: If I become hypnotized, I may not be able to snap out of it or remember what was said during the session.

Fact: Hypnosis is very safe and is, in fact, a state of relaxed-awareness. At any time you can naturally come out of the hypnotic state simply by opening your eyes. In fact sometimes we might agree to go in and out of trance so that you can let me know what adjustments to make. The truth about hypnosis is that you are relaxed but highly aware during hypnosis. You hear every word that is uttered. However, after the session, you may find that you may only have a partial memory of what you heard while in hypnosis – but when do you ever remember a whole conversation in its entirety? But just to reassure you nothing strange is going on – you will always receive a recording of the session.

Myth 4: Hypnosis is a “Miracle Cure”. There’s nothing I need to do to make the changes I want in my life.

Fact: While Hypnosis is a relatively quick method of making transformative improvements, there is no such thing as a one-time “Hypno-Miracle”! Every individual makes progress at his or her own rate dependent on their life experience, their willingness to try different ways of doing things and their openness to new ideas. Be wary of those who make wild claims of overnight success. Issues that have been persistent or are complex can have a few layers to them. Some clients experience enough change in one session, other clients ask for more sessions to make the changes they want. . Once we have mapped and better understand your pattern you will decide how many sessions you need in conjunction with your hypnotherapist.

Myth 5: I can’t be hypnotized because my mind is too strong/ disciplined. I’m too analytical.

Fact: This is an old belief that has, in recent times, been proven untrue. Because it is your decision to use hypnosis for self-improvement, your mind has already accepted the idea of Hypnotherapy and is willing to relax and be open to suggestions. Your conscious mind is welcome to track the whole session and work out what’s going on. There is no mystery in this. Just utilizing both the conscious mind and subconscious mind to increase the likelihood of success. Most likely you will find you are motivated to make beneficial changes in your life towards your goals and will be willing to enter a state of relaxed, yet heightened awareness to increase the likelihood of this happening.
